Creating a Dark Walnut
or Ebony stain color. |
Previously painted furniture
If the furniture you are
working on has an existing
coat of paint or varnish
then you’ll need to give the
furniture a light sanding
first to remove the top
layer of existing finish to
allow the base color paint
to adhere.
Painting and staining over
unfinished
wood
You can sand or strip the
finish off, getting down to
the raw wood, allowing you
to stain the furniture with
wood stains in a variety of
tones, from deep Ebony to a
lighter wood tone, like
Fruit Wood or Birch. You
would then need to apply a
sealer over the stain. The
whole piece can be sealed
with a satin sheen sealer,
like polyurethane or
varnish.
Creating a hand rubbed
appearance using waxes
To give the piece a hand
rubbed look us tinted Bree
wax, in a dark brown or
black color, found at most
good paint supply stores.
Rub on, let sit a moment
then polish off. This gives
a light antique effect as
well as a hand rubbed
appearance.
Creating an Antique Ivory
Finish
Another option is to create
a worn ivory effect. Paint a
base color in an off-white
tone, like Antique White or
Linen White, in a latex
eggshell finish paint.
Follow the tutorial on this
site for ‘Antiquing
Furniture’ found at the
artSparx Color Palette.
The recipe will show you the
colors combinations needed
and the technique to follow.
If you apply this in a
loose, uncontrolled manner
you can create a rustic,
worn effect.
Accenting the furniture
Finish the piece off by
adding an accent color,
either a deep red or gold
paint, to the drawer edges,
or some other profile, to
really accentuate an Asian
theme.

Aluminum Leaf

Gold or

Aluminum
Leaf imitates the illusion of
genuine
Silver, at a fraction of
the cost. Each
individual sheet is
bigger and easier to
handle then its genuine
counter part. |
The same
applies for 'Dutch Gold',
or 'Composition Leaf'.
But due to the large
brass content, this
imitation gold must have
a sealer applied to
prevent tarnishing,
unlike genuine gold
leaf. |
