Subject:	Dark brown 80's cabinets made lighter without stripping/repainting

I have very old kitchen cabinets, dark oil-based stain and varnish. Don't want to do all work necessary to re-paint them, but would like them to be lighter OR embellished in some inexpensive way. Any suggestions for someone like me who wants the most bang for their I-don't-want-to-do-too-much-nor-pay-alot-for-it buck? TIA, Phyllis
