Subject: Layered antiqued decoupage
Message:
I bought a small trunk-like box at Waccamaw mainly because I loved the technique used to finish it. It was probably imported and I would love to know how to duplicate the finish, but I cannot figure it out. It has a decoupaged print that is crackled and split in places on top and with darkened cracks (some are light colored) to look aged and is matte finished. Before the decoupage was applied, some types of layers were added in low relief in a manner that seemed to separate as if over a long period of time (sort of like dropping denatured alcohol on some paints and it separates, only this is thicker). Then the decoupage was applied to the relief areas and conformed to the relief. Another technique used on top of the decoupage is that in some areas it looks as though some sort of solvent was poured to make the dyes in the decoupage paper separate. I've done a good bit of decoupage, but this really has me puzzled. It seems to be one of those "advanced" secret techniques. It is really beautiful! Does anyone know how this was done? Thank you
