Subject:	Painting over wood paneling

We have a small room with dark wood paneling I discovered when I removed the ugly wall paper. The paneling has lots of paint spots and isn't in good shape, otherwise I'd keep it. I want to paint over it and lighten up the room. What is the best technique for it? I know I"ll have to prime and then paint. I am not terribly gifted or patient, so nothing too difficult please! Thanks.
