Subject: Antiquing, glazing over oil based enamel
Message:
I have white enameled cabinets. I would like to know how to do two different things with these. First, I would like to do an antique old world look to my "island" cabinetry where one color, a warm gray would peek through under a dark umber when distress sanded. Do I have to sand and or prime the base enamel first or can I just put and oil based medium right over the enamel and go from there? Then, as a final finish I have heard to use a paste wax. Can you help me with the instructions on how to achieve this look and finish?
Secondly, I am considering a gray glaze over the rest of the white enameled cabinets. Should I just use an oil based tinted glaze right over the enamel or is there some prep work that needs to be done? I am also undecided about whether it would look better to wipe away all the glaze except for that which settles in the edges and corners or if it would look better to have a wash of glaze over the entire surface letting it settle darker in the edges?
I am very concerned about what mediums and techniques to use with these enameled cabinets and would appreciate being informed about the paste wax too.
I would greatly appreciate any input.
