Subject: color washing over dark red

I painted my dining room a rich red barn color. I love it when I enter into the room but it does not flow as well from the kitchen. Thinking about color washing with either a white or cream color paint. I also have beige and tan. What color should I use. Wondering if I should sponge a color on before washing the walls. If so, what color would you suggest? I would just like to soften the red a bit.
