staining

I have a medium finished wood bedroom set (don't know exact type of wood - darker than maple - oak looking?). anyway, I wanted to do an Asian themed room, with the base of the dressers, etc. being stained maybe a raw umber type stain, and the drawers being lighter. obviously I can't stain the medium wood lighter. suggestions on how to make the drawers fit this look, without being shiny preferably?? also, the back of the bookcase in the set is board-like, with veneer, instead of real wood. could I apply whatever you suggest for the drawers to this too, and if so, how? I'd appreciate any help!!
