Subject: Glazing over stained Cabinets

I am remodeling my bathroom. I hired a Menonite to build the cabinet. Unfortunately, he will stain the unfinished cabinet which will be maple but knows nothing about glazing which is the effect I am looking for. My question is after he stains the wood how would I go about glazing it before he seals it? I dont use the same glaze as you would for walls would I? What are the ratios. How do you pick the new glaze stain color compared to the cabinet stain. You would want a darker stain color to mix with the glaze wouldnt you to have a contrast. Where would I buy the glaze and what kind of stain would I use, (ie. oil based, water).HELP...Im so confused. Thanks
