Subject: Acheiving a red-laquered paint effect on kitchen cupboards

My name is Debbie & I am wanting to apply a red laquered effect to my kitchen cupboards. They are currently finished in an oil-based paint in a rather dirty magnolia shade which I am desperate to eliminate. I am acutely aware of the extensive preparation involved in this project but I am prepared to do whatever is necessary to acheive the desired effect. I would be extremly grateful if someone could suggest how I might go about applying a finish that will give me the laquered effect I am wanting.
