SAN FRANCISCO –
Do-it-yourself doesn’t mean “it” has to look like
you did it yourself. At artSparx.com, an interior
design web site, visitors are given easy-to-follow
steps and suggested materials and tools to give a
piece of furniture, a room or an entire home a whole
new look.
Recognized by Forbes Magazine as Best of the Web and
one of the Top 10 Home Decorating Web Sites,
artSparx.com offers weekly magazine-style features
on design concepts and groups them with step-by-step
tutorials on design techniques. Subjects include
color mixing, gold leafing, decorative paint
effects, furniture renovation and stenciling.
“For
example, if we feature Edwardian style, the home
page would include a brief history of the time
period, a tutorial on silver leafing, fabric styles
from that era, Edwardian-style prints and a
selection of books on Edwardian homes,” says Tobias
Freccia, who founded artSparx in 2001.
“artSparx.com provides the tools needed to transform
a room or an entire house to reflect a certain time
period or cultural influence.”
Some of
the site’s many style features are Tuscan, Mexican,
Adams, Victorian, Baroque and even Flea Market. “We
have style features and tutorials from around the
world and through the ages,” Freccia says. “Each
period and locale has something interesting and
unique to offer. At artSparx, we celebrate those
design elements.”
Because
color mixing is a popular topic among
do-it-yourselfers, artSparx has created an entire
section called The Color Learning Center.
“Using
color at home or in the office - for paintings,
furniture or any artistic challenge - takes a good
eye, a little know-how, and a creative imagination.
It also poses a number of obstacles that can keep
someone from progressing on a project,” says
Freccia, who has worked as a color consultant, fine
arts lecturer and educator. With its colorScheme
program, artSparx helps people understand the
fundamentals of color and how to incorporate these
elements to create color solutions for any project.
The colorSelect section gets more specific by
providing color mixing recipes to make custom glaze.
In addition
to tutorials and design elements, artSparx.com also
has a section where people can ask specific
questions about their projects, aptly called “Ask
artSparx.” This free bulletin board allows users to
post questions on home improvement, color selection,
home décor, gilding and fine arts. Thousands of
questions already are posted by
subject with answers,
but visitors to the site can tailor their questions
and receive responses from artSparx’s design
experts.
